Here are some of the most common questions we receive from visitors to the Mt. Carmel Property.
Are you open year round?
The Thunderbird Foundation headquarters and gallery is open year round. Our hours are 10am to 5pm or by appointment, 7 days a week. The Dixon property and buildings are open March through October, weather permitting.
Do I need to make a reservation for a tour of the property?
Self-guided tours can be purchased when you arrive at the property. Self-guided tours are $10.00 per person and can be purchased from the Thunderbird Foundation headquarters just south of the property.
Docent-guided tours must be scheduled in advance and can be done so by clicking here or by calling the Thunderbird Foundation headquarters at 435-648-2653.
Where are you located?
The Maynard Dixon Legacy Museum is located on Highway 89 in the beautiful town of Mt. Carmel Utah, just 13 miles east of Zion National Park. We’re 100 miles north of the Grand Canyon and 73 miles southwest of Bryce Canyon. When visiting, check in at the Thunderbird Foundation headquarters, located at 2200 S. State Street, Mt. Carmel, Utah.
Are there original Maynard Dixon paintings in the studio?
There are several examples of Maynard Dixon artwork throughout the buildings. These are very fine reproductions. The current market for paintings by artist Maynard Dixon causes them to be very rare. Prints by Maynard Dixon and other noted artists are available for sale in the Thunderbird Foundation gallery and gift shop.
Is the location where Dixon’s ashes are buried easily accessible?
Although it is a short hike up the hill, those who wish to visit the memorial site should plan to wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a steep hike to the location. If you’re up for the small trek, the views of the valley are extraordinary. The ashes of Milford Zornes and his wife Patty Zornes are also located adjacent to this spot.
